My Career Development as a Senior Communications Officer @ Leedsmet

It has been a busy few months, I have been extremely busy doing some market research to development a business concept I've been working on since graduating from university, The concept is moving into the development phase in a few weeks time and I'm targeting to launch my business in July this year.

The theme of the business is: "On-Demand Technology Services Marketplace" a new module for how IT and technology services are purchased and provided.

Service Buyers Need

  • Qualified and reliable providers
  • Increased customer satisfaction
  • Geographic and skills set coverage
  • Visibility and control
  • Cost containment
  • Service Providers Need

  • Access to more work
  • Projects that match their skills
  • Profitable growth
  • Rapid payment
  • Increase utilisation rates

For those interested in becoming members (Service Buyers or Service Providers) please email me your interest and I'll notify you just before the site is launched so you can be one of the first to benefit from The On-Demand Technology Services Marketplace for the UK's Information Technology (IT) Industry.
  • Meanwhile, my career at Leedsmet is moving upwards and getting better, I recently secured a Senior Communications Officer position for the university's Telecoms department, I am very excited about the job and very keen on settling in pretty quickly and then getting to grips with the job and everything around it. I work within a dedicated team responsible for the university’s voice and data network and its fun getting faults resolved in the earliest possible time.

Well, till next time, have a good day/night.

    The Gambia 2007

The Gambia, my native country is just 6 and half hours aways from major UK airports, earlier this year I visited The Gambia, whilst touring, I visited my old School, St Peter’s Junior & Senior Secondary School, where I was taken on a site visit which included the school's IT Laboratory. There I met a few students who were learning how to type using the famous, Mavis Beacon Typing Tutor.

The school is one of the pioneers in setting up IT labs for students to learn the basics in computing, one of those students being myself, I remember using those old computers to learn html.

    About Me

I'm an IT Officer for the Faculty of health at Leeds Metropolitan University, and also run an Online & On-Site Computer Services website with over a 100 subscribing customers around the world, our clients get friendly and professional IT helpdesk services and advice via the internet in resolving their IT problems. My experience Re: 'Race policy' on nightclub doors

It all started on Saturday the 3rd of June 2006, when my friend and I were queuing to get into Townhouse in Leeds, we joined the queue like everyone else, as it happens I looked up and saw a coloured young man being denied entry, at first I though it might have been due to his outfit or something else, but just before we get close to the doors, a doorman came up to me asking if I was with my mate.

I answered yes and he then point blank said "not tonight mate", at first I though he was joking but then as we draw nearer to the gates they just said "step out of the queue" as if we were some kind of animal, at least that’s how I felt, I felt belittled, humiliated and discriminated against just because of the colour of my skin as we were properly dressed compared to some of those they let in.

I thought, as a tax paying individual I am entitled to go out and have fun just like anybody, but to be denied entry just because of my colour is just not on. Apparently, a lot of coloured people have been stopped or denied entry to Townhouse on numerous occasions without any reasonable explanations whasoever.

    My Placement Experience @ Leedsmet

Hi there, I would like to personally welcome you to my blog, being an undergraduate student at leedsmet has been very stimulating and challenging at times, but with continues hard work and dedication, I have successfully managed to complete my degree and graduated this year with a 2:1 degree in BSC (Hon) Computing - Computer Communications. I though I'd share my industrial and final year experiences with you all. To see my final year modules and assignments please visit my university documents at http://www.ijatta.com/documents/

During my third year of studies at Leeds met, I took a year out to undertake an industrial work placement within the University's computing support and operations deparment(Computing Services).

Computing Service underpins the information and Learning Development Strategies of the University, through development & support for the staff and student computing infrastructure, corporate systems and the technology infrastructure.

    This department is responsibilities for:
o the development, operation and support of the university’s voice and data networks
o the management of computing servers
    o corporate database management
o the management of email and other communication services
o the operation of corporate data centre and systems
o personal computer purchase, installation and support
o a comprehensive fault-reporting and service support desk

My role as a placement student included the provision of first and second line support services to the staff helpdesk and also providing operational and technical support for desktop hardware and software, including fault fixing, configuration and installation. I was also responsible for routine operation and administration of central corporate and group hardware and systems.

    My responsibilities included:
o Support of a “help desk” service to staff using corporate, group and desktop computing systems including first line fault finding and rectification for hardware and software.
o Provision, under appropriate supervision where appropriate, of second line support for all corporate, group, desktop and student IT suite computing systems including installation, modification, fault-finding and rectification for hardware and software.
o Operation under appropriate supervision where appropriate of central and group computer systems, including start-up and close-down of hardware and software, security procedures and control of media.
o Performing of routine maintenance, backup procedures and fault control for central computing systems
o Administration and control of central data input and output, entry of data where necessary, and associated administrative tasks.
o Appropriate assistance to and cooperation with the other staff of Computing Services and the staff of other Departments of Learning & Information Services.
o Performance of other technical or administrative duties as directed by the Support and Operation Manager. See more http://www.ijatta.com/documents/Placement_Report.pdf

Upon graduation, I managed to secure a job with Computing Services and have recently been appointed as IT Officer for the faculty of health @ Leedsmet. life is a little different now that I don't have to write assignments and reports etc but I do however miss those days i.e assignment deadlines and so on.

My advice to those undergoing their final year at university is to get a head start as soon as possible as time goes by very fast, and before you know it, its probably too late. for those of you in your final year, try and get the most marks as you can as final year marks count more towards your final degree classification.

There are more useful information/sample assignment work for computing students especially those doing Advance Commmunications technology, Network and Systems Managements, Human Computer Interractions, IP Research and Data & Network Security. Have a look at my website @ http://www.ijatta.com/ under Final Year Modules - 2005/06 for more information, I must warn you they are not the best assignments but I do however managed to score at least a 2:1 in all module assigments.

Have a brilliant year and good luck with your studies.

    Welcome to my blog

Hi my name is Ismaila Jatta, am a graduate of Leeds Metropolitan University on BSc (Hon) Computing - Computer Communications, This degree course spaned over four years, during my third year of study, I inturned at the university's suport and operations department where my duties included the day-to-day support of all staff and students at Harrogate College (Part of Leedsmet). the year has helped me gained valueable customer service, team working, troubleshooting and technical skills all of which will play a vital role in my future career (Network Security Specialist)

When I returned to university in september 2005 to start my final year, I did notice an improvement of time management and overall determination, I managed to get all my assignments done well in advance and to high standards achieving at least 2.1 in all my assignments, except for individual project where I scored a 2.2. I wasn't suprised about that mark as I am more of a technical person. My final degree classificaiton is an upper second class degree (2.1), only missed a first class degree by 3 points.

Life after university is beginning to sink in, now that I've started working, I can't help but feel its going to be ok as I am liking what am doing. I enjoy working with computer systems and networks in an environment that is both challenging and stimulating.

In the future I would like to specialise in network security as I am very interested on that side of networking.

Anyways, I will keep this blog alive and up-to-date about what I am doing and some interesting stuff in my life and career.

Thank you for taking your time to read my blog.

    Ismaila.
